The Norwegian National Barbecue Team

We are a team of barbecue fanatics, all of whom work daily with food. Some of us are chefs, others butchers, and some work with product development for grill- and barbecue-related products.

We have competed in the Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest each year since 2007 and we have won numerous awards in several categories. We have also competed in the Jack Daniel´s World Championship Invitational Barbecue.

May 2, 2019:

We are excited to announce that the team will again be competing in Memphis. This will be our 12th visit since 2007 and we can’t wait! We will be in booth R-097.

April 27, 2017:

It´s all about barbecue! This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest. For the Norwegian National Barbecue Team 2017 marks the team´s 10th anniversary as competitors in planet Earth´s most important barbecue cookoff. The contest takes place in Tom Lee Park, on the shores of the Mississippi River, May 17-20. Our stand number is R-063, so do drop by for a visit if you are in the Memphis area.

April 24, 2016:

It´s only two weeks until the team leaves for Memphis. This will be the tenth year in a row for us and the 40th anniversary of the cookoff in Memphis. Last year we got 3rd place in Exotic and 4th in the Kingsford Tour of Champions. We are looking forward to another great year in 2016. We have a new sponsor this year, Alimenta, and we´d like to extend a big thanks to them. This year´s team is the same as last year: Bjørn Tore, Anne Kathrine, Johnny, Nico, Endre, Robby and Craig. We are ready to Smoke!

July 5th, 2015

The team had another successful year in Memphis, winning a 3rd place trophy in “Exotic” (with a delicious rack of lamb) as well as 4th place in “Kingsford´s Tour of Champions”, a competition exclusively for teams that have come in the Top 20 in the main categories (Whole Hog, Ribs or Pork Shoulder). Here we competed with some of the biggest names in the barbecue world. We are really proud of both of these awards and we look forward to competing in next year´s Memphis in May competition.

May 3rd, 2015

This year´s cookoff in Memphis is May 14-16. The team is leaving for the US at the end of this week and we will arrive in Memphis on Tuesday, May 12th. This year´s team is made up of Bjørn Tore, Anne Kathrine, Johnny, Endre, Nico and myself. New this year are Robby Robertson and Johnny´s wife Birgitte. We are looking forward to seeing all our friends in Memphis - and to picking up a trophy or two while we´re there!

December 1st, 2013:

We are excited to announce that our team will be returning to Memphis in 2014. We want to thank our main sponsor REMA 1000 for supporting The Norwegian National Barbecue Team again this year. We will work hard to make Norway proud of our efforts, and hopefully we´ll have to meet the challenge of "Hm, how are we going to get this huge trophy back to Norway?" Be there or be square!

March 28th, 2013

It´s the middle of March and we can feel it in our bones: only two months until this year´s Memphis in May competition. Last year was another highlight for the team. We placed 3rd in Exotic, 6th in Beef and for the first time ever in the Top 10 in the main category (Pork Shoulder). We placed 8th, just a hair´s breath back Chris Lilly and other BBQ greats. This was a fantastic honor and we really feel we have become serious contenders.

This year we will spend a few days in New Orleans before driving to Memphis. OK, yes, we´ll be eating some seafood (love that Barbecued Shrimp!), but from Tuesday night when we arrive in Memphis we will be ready to rock. May 14th, 2012

Well folks, we have arrived in Texas in preparation for the competition at Memphis in May. Just today we ate 3 consecutive lunches in Lockhart Texas, devouring brisket at Smitty´s, shoulder clod at Kreutz and delicious beef ribs at Black´s. We would also like to welcome onboard the outstanding southern Rhône winery Domaine de Mourchon, whose wines we will be serving in Memphis. Dom. Mourchon´s grenache are the perfect combination to the smoky meaty flavors that true American barbecue offers. The wines of Rhône and the barbecue that our team is making is a unique combination in the world of gastronomy!
